I hate to break it to you, but people have always had to hustle to live in San Francisco. Given the low pay and high rents we have always enjoyed here. I looked around the Paradise Lounge (used to be a hot club with four stages on Folsom and 11th) one happy hour evening and tried to guess how each of the regulars made a living and came up with a song, “Everybody’s got a scheme to stay in San Francisco.” One job was never enough, especially for an artist. You never knew when the next one would come and you had to be fast on your feet to get it done so you would never have to turn one down. I was famous for doing freelance jobs on my work vacations. San Francisco was never easy.
